Satellite Thermal Model

Project type

Thermal System Design

Date

2025

Designed 3D thermal model of a low earth orbit satellite using MATLAB Simscape. The satellite is composed of 9 subsystems which interface with each other, the satellite chassis, and the environments they are facing (earth, sun, or deep space). Each unit is designed with a fixed dissipation level and to stay within acceptable temperature ranges for a hot, cold, and survival case. Each case simulates 15 100-minute orbits including eclipses.

Modeled conduction through hardware and fasteners and radiation from surroundings using inverse square law. Captured transient effects of eclipses, thermal masses, and variable dissipation of subsystems. Modeled electronics cooling of a PCB with through plane conduction in Electronics Unit (shown). Modeled 3D satellite layout in SolidWorks. Maintained thermals using radiators, cryocooler, and strategic placement of subsystems. Justified assumptions as needed.
